Cotham Gardens is proud to be a Power of Reading School. High quality children’s literature, reading for pleasure and proven creative teaching approaches are at the heart of our English curriculum. This ensures that all children are explicitly taught to speak, listen, read and write with fluency and confidence.
Centred around high quality texts, our curriculum teaches:
- language and grammar
- free writing
- free reading
- reading skills and strategies
Writers learn about writing from reading, studying and discussing quality texts. Teachers help children become familiar with written language through a daily read aloud session covering lots of different literary styles. The daily English lesson will often use emotionally powerful texts to engage the children in their learning. There are lots of opportunities for drama activities within teaching sequences and a range of writing opportunities planned around the text.
Children at Cotham Gardens will develop into enthusiastic readers and writers with the confidence to communicate their ideas to a range of audiences. Children will be able to speak positively about reading and writing and have the ability and skills to continue to develop their speaking, reading and writing onto the next stage of their learning and beyond.
