English
Intent
High quality children’s literature, reading for pleasure and proven creative teaching approaches are at the heart of our CUSP English curriculum. This ensures that all children are explicitly taught to speak, listen, read and write with fluency and confidence.
Implementation
Our CUSP English curriculum teaches:
- fiction and non-fiction writing
- handwriting through Letter-join
- daily reading fluency lessons
- grammar and punctuation
- phonics (Little Wandle)
- spelling
- explicit vocabulary instruction
Writers learn about writing from reading, studying and discussing quality texts. Teachers help children become familiar with written language through a daily read aloud session covering lots of different literary styles. The daily English lesson will often use emotionally powerful texts to engage the children in their learning and lesson structure which allow plentiful opportunity for guided and independent practice.
Impact
Children at Cotham Gardens will develop into enthusiastic readers and writers with the confidence to communicate their ideas to a range of audiences. Children will be able to speak positively about reading and writing and have the ability and skills to continue to develop their speaking, reading and writing onto the next stage of their learning and beyond.
