Message from the Head of School

Thank you for the many lovely comments on the gate this afternoon. I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the school long term.

Chris’s letter also announced the good news that Elmtree Preschool Nursery will be moving into one of our spare classrooms at Elmgrove from September. This is a really positive development for our school and the lower site in particular. It will be lovely to have very young children learning and playing onsite with our own Early Years and Key Stage 1 children at Elmgrove.

Our school values assembly earlier this week was all about DEMOCRACY and was linked to a discussion about the political system in our country as well as the elections that took place yesterday. Please take a moment to ask your child about it and see if they can remember some of the facts.

Finally, you may be aware that a school in Henbury dealt with a hoax communication this morning. Police attended Blaise High School, at about 8.55am today (Friday 2 May), as a precaution after school staff received a threatening e-mail. While the threat was assessed as not credible, officers helped school staff to check the building and grounds to reassure the school community. Nothing of concern was found. With this in mind, we wanted to reassure you that our school remains safe and secure.

Have a lovely long weekend and see you back in school on Tuesday.

We have also seen a huge improvement in the number of pupils arriving on time for school. Thank you for your continued support.

Punctuality Reminder

When a child arrives late to school, they miss important events like assembly, teacher instructions and introductions. Children often also feel embarrassed at having to enter the classroom late. Gates close at 8.55am and children should be in class, ready for registration at  9am. Children arriving after the gate closes should be signed in late via the screens in the school office entrance.

If your child arrives after 9.30am, the morning session will be marked as unauthorised.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - MISSING LUNCHES FROM NEXT WEEK

As you know, we ask parents and carers to book their child’s lunch choices in advance via Arbor. This helps reduce food waste, saves our office staff from having to call home, and allows our teachers to start lessons promptly in the morning.

Despite some improvements, we are still facing an issue with approximately 90 missing lunch choices each morning. To assist with this any child without a lunch choice or home packed lunch in the morning will automatically be booked for an emergency jacket potato.

Allergen Options

Allergen lunch options are specifically for children with documented allergens (e.g., dairy-free, gluten-free). Please only select these choices if your child has a specific allergen, as our kitchen prepare only what is necessary for those with allergens.

We understand that there have been issues with the descriptions in the new menu and apologise for any confusion this may have caused. Please rest assured that these were all checked and updated at the beginning of this week, so it should now be clear which lunch choices are allergen-only.

Please can we kindly request you to check any future bookings and amend if necessary.

Thank you for your cooperation in making lunchtime smoother for everyone. We truly appreciate your support and understanding as we all adjust to using Arbor!

REPAIR-EID PROJECT!

Thank you from the Repair-Ed Project!

Arathi Sriprakash from the Repair-Ed Research Project at the University of Oxford visited Cotham Gardens Primary School before Easter to speak to teaching staff, parents, and former pupils about their educational experiences.

By listening directly to stakeholders, the Repair-Ed project explores how schools across Bristol can better address racial and class inequalities. Some of the key issues raised by stakeholders so far include:

  • The importance of a culturally-responsive curriculum and pedagogy
  • The need to improve Black and Ethnic Minority representation and retention in the teaching workforce
  • The importance of parent-school partnerships in building racial literacies in schools.

Repair-Ed researchers will continue to visit schools across the city and diverse perspectives are being brought together in an online interactive archive which you can access here – A People’s History of Schooling in Bristol.

Arathi would like to thank the Cotham Gardens community for welcoming the project. She’ll be staying in touch with the school to share resources that the Repair-Ed Project develops. In the meantime, you can follow updates on their website: www.repair-ed.uk.

ABSENCE REQUESTS & TERM DATES

As stated in our school attendance policy, only exceptional circumstances warrant an authorised leave of absence. Generally, a need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure, recreation or visiting family would not constitute an exceptional circumstance.

If seeking permission for exceptional circumstances leave of absence, the parent/guardian should complete a Leave of Absence Request form. The request should be submitted as soon as it is anticipated; and wherever possible, at least four weeks before the absence. Leave of absence cannot be approved retrospectively.

The school will consider each application individually, considering the specific facts and circumstances. Parents may be required to provide the school with additional evidence in order to support the request. The expectation of the school is that term time holidays should not be planned or booked as a matter of course, as they are likely to be unauthorised.

1. A Penalty Notice

The penalty is £80 per parent, per child payable within 21 days, rising to £160 per parent, per child if paid between 22 and 28 days. (Failure to pay will result in prosecution.) 2. Prosecution

YR3 GROUP WORK

Year 3 have had another wonderful week. They are producing excellent third person narratives, which are focused on predators and prey, and the writing is very exciting to read! In Maths, we have been getting stuck into time and the children have worked really hard on this challenging concept. We have also really enjoyed having Simon Porter teach us tennis whilst our Art lesson was brilliant. We were using tabs, slots and strings to join cardboard together and create sculptures. Well done for being so amazing Year 3!

6W BOOK CORNER

We have been reading 'Escape Room' by Christopher Edge, who visited us a while back.

When twelve-year-old Ami arrives at The Escape, she thinks it's just a game - the ultimate escape room with puzzles and challenges to beat before time runs out. Meeting her teammates, Adjoa, Ibrahim, Oscar and Min, Ami learns from the Host that they have been chosen to save the world and they must work together to find the Answer. But as he locks them inside the first room, they quickly realise this is no ordinary game.
