Message from the Head of School
Welcome back to the Summer Term.
The children have got straight back into the flow of school and are excited to be exploring their new topics of learning. We have lots of enrichment activities happening this term. This week in Year 6, Dave Pearce from GWR came into school to deliver a workshop about the safety features of the railway station, in preparation for designing their own station with architects and engineers on the 8th May. Simon Porter has begun tennis sessions with Years 3 and 4, and Year 1 have started an exciting oracy project with Shooting Fish Theatre company that will run right through until the end of the academic year and culminate with the children producing a radio play. Watch (listen to) this space!
It was lovely to see so many parents and carers in school for our open mornings and consultation meetings this week. Having listened to feedback, we changed the format to make more face-to-face appointments available whilst still retaining the flexibility of online meetings for those who prefer that. I also asked teachers to ensure that clear attainment information was shared with you to keep you fully informed. We would be pleased to hear any feedback on the consultation arrangements via office@cothamgardens.co.uk
I am delighted to say that we have now taken delivery of new pianos for each of the school halls. These were funded by the PTAF and will be very useful for assembly and general music making. Your support of the PTAF makes a huge difference to the ‘extras’ we can provide in school – thank you to everyone involved.
Have a lovely weekend.

GOLDEN CERTIFICATE WINNERS
ATTENDANCE WINNERS AND REMINDERS
This week’s class attendance winners are:
Class 4OB with 99% - Well done!
This week’s class punctuality winners are
Honeybees, Dragonflies and 5B all with 100% Well done!
Can we also say a big well done to Ladybirds, 4OB, 5MC, 6J, 6B and 6W who all had 99% punctuality!
Whole school attendance this week was 95%
We have also seen a huge improvement in the number of pupils arriving late for school. Thank you for your continued support.
Punctuality Reminder
When a child arrives late to school, they miss important events like assembly, teacher instructions and introductions. Children often also feel embarrassed at having to enter the classroom late. Gates close at 8.55am and children should be in class, ready for registration at 9am. Children arriving after the gate closes should be signed in late via the screens in the school office entrance.
If your child arrives after 9.30am, the morning session will be marked as unauthorised.
IMPORTANT UPDATE - MISSING LUNCHES FROM NEXT WEEK
As you know, we ask parents and carers to book their child’s lunch choices in advance via Arbor. This helps reduce food waste, saves our office staff from having to call home, and allows our teachers to start lessons promptly in the morning.
Despite some improvements, we are still facing an issue with approximately 90 missing lunch choices each morning. To assist with this, from next week, any child without a lunch choice or home packed lunch in the morning will automatically be booked for an emergency jacket potato.
Allergen Options
Allergen lunch options are specifically for children with documented allergens (e.g., dairy-free, gluten-free). Please only select these choices if your child has a specific allergen, as our kitchen prepare only what is necessary for those with allergens.
We understand that there have been issues with the descriptions in the new menu and apologise for any confusion this may of caused. Please rest assured that these were all checked and updated at the beginning of this week, so should now be clear what lunch choices are allergen-only.
Please can we kindly request you to check any future bookings and amend if necessary.
Thank you for your cooperation in making lunchtime smoother for everyone. We truly appreciate your support and understanding as we all adjust to using Arbor!
REPAIR-EID PROJECT!
Thank you from the Repair-Ed Project!
Arathi Sriprakash from the Repair-Ed Research Project at the University of Oxford visited Cotham Gardens Primary School before Easter to speak to teaching staff, parents, and former pupils about their experiences. By listening directly to stakeholders, the Repair-Ed project explores how schools across Bristol can better address racial and class inequalities. Repair-Ed researchers will continue to visit schools across the city and these perspectives are being brought together in an online interactive archive which you can access here – A People’s History of Schooling in Bristol.
Arathi would like to thank the Cotham Gardens community for welcoming the project. She’ll be staying in touch with the school to share resources that the Repair-Ed Project develops. In the meantime, you can follow updates on their website: www.repair-ed.uk.

ABSENCE REQUESTS & TERM DATES
As stated in our school attendance policy, only exceptional circumstances warrant an authorised leave of absence. Generally, a need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure, recreation or visiting family would not constitute an exceptional circumstance.
If seeking permission for exceptional circumstances leave of absence, the parent/guardian should complete a Leave of Absence Request form. The request should be submitted as soon as it is anticipated; and wherever possible, at least four weeks before the absence. Leave of absence cannot be approved retrospectively.
The school will consider each application individually, considering the specific facts and circumstances. Parents may be required to provide the school with additional evidence in order to support the request. The expectation of the school is that term time holidays should not be planned or booked as a matter of course, as they are likely to be unauthorised.
1. A Penalty Notice
The penalty is £80 per parent, per child payable within 21 days, rising to £160 per parent, per child if paid between 22 and 28 days. (Failure to pay will result in prosecution.) If a second Penalty Notice is issued within a rolling 3-year period the penalty is £160 per parent, per child if paid within 28 days. There will be no option to pay a lower amount.
2. Prosecution
Prosecution could lead to fines up to £2500 and /or up to 3 months imprisonment. (See DfE’s statutory guidance on School attendance parental responsibility measures for more information and Bristol City Council’s Penalty Notice Code of Conduct, available here).

YR4 GROUP WORK
Year 4 had a fabulous Spring term and we are really looking forward to all that is planned for the Summer term too! Throughout the Spring we built carved soap, went to M-Shed and became Anglo-Saxon experts, and experimented with ice cubes! Wow!
As artists the children explored 3D shape and structures. We focussed on a selection of artists including Magdalene Odundo and her large, sweeping sketches. We created a variety artworks including drawing outside, carving soap sculptures and using shadows.
As historians we explored what life was like in Anglo-Saxon Britain. The children took a great interest in what day to day life would have been like – we even built our own walls using wattle and daub! This lead nicely to our trip to The M-Shed, where we were lucky enough to have an Anglo-Saxon workshop lead by the experts themselves! It was fascinating and a fabulous opportunity for the children to show off all their new knowledge!
We are only one week into Term 5 and yet have already completed some wonderful learning! Despite the staffing changes, the children have settled back in really well and are already getting to grips with our new topics.
In history this term we are investigating Mayan civilization and just how they managed to survive for so long in a rainforest. In DT we are planning and building our own cladded pavilions, we’ve already began exploring 3D shape and which are strongest!
We’ve continued our fraction and decimal learning and are now ready to move on to money, time and shape this term. We continue to work hard on our times tables to ensure they become a part of our DNA!
We are all so proud of Year 4 and their return to the Summer term and are looking forward to the rest of the year with them!
